Share Our Lives : Unique Things About Where I Live

It’s the second Monday of the month, so it’s time to share our lives. This month, we share unique things about where we live. Some of the things may not be unique, but if it’s something I love about where I live, I’ll include it as well. There are so many things I love about it, but these are the first five I thought of when I read the prompt. Maybe soon I’ll write a post listing ALL of the things I love about where I live 🙂

I live in a small town in North Mississippi. We aren’t near the ocean, but we can be at the Gulf in about 6 hours, and the Atlantic in about 10. We do have a very nice big lake, and several smaller bodies of water for those who need that time on the water.

#1 – We are in Elvis country.

We can be at his birthplace in about an hour, and his home, Graceland, in about an hour and a half.

#2 – Home of the Slugburger

It’s not what you think. The slugburger name came from another name for a nickel, sometimes called a slug. It was developed during the Great Depression when money and meat were scarce. Slug burgers were made with a mixture of beef and pork, potato flour as an extender, and spices, then fried in animal fat. It is best served with mustard, pickle, and onion. They really are tasty! You can read more about them here. We even have a Slugburger Festival every July.

#3 – Home to the oldest drugstore in the United States still operated by the same family.

You can read more about it here, but the short version is, it was started during the Civil War and is still an operating pharmacy. It also houses a museum, a soda fountain, and serves lunch (including the famous slugburger) every day except Sundays.

#4 – We were the “Crossroads of the South” during the Civil War.

The Memphis and Charleston was the only rail route from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean in the entire South, and the Mobile and Ohio was the longest north-south route in the South, providing access to the deep South. The railroad is still active today, and that “rail crossover” can still be seen.

#5 – Downtown looks like something out of a Hallmark movie at Christmas time.

This picture does not do it justice. This is only showing one street.
